The fan-favorite comic returns with an introductory jumping-on point for new readers.
"Darkstalkers, with its classic cast of horror-themed characters including Morrigan and Felicia, has had a dedicated fan base for years, spawning anime OAVs, manga and countless other successful licensed products. Rival Schools, one of Capcom's most beloved 3-D fighting games, expands the Street Fighter universe with a massive cast of new and familiar faces in a tale that is equal parts kung-fu and comedic high school drama.
Much like the highly sought-after surprise hit Street Fighter #0 of 2003, [the Capcom Summer Special 2004] will contain three all-new original stories from the three respective Capcom titles: Street Fighter (featuring a Chun-Li story by Ken Siu-Chong, Arnold Tsang and Andrew Hou), Darkstalkers (featuring the origin of Morrigan by Ken Siu-Chong and Alvin Lee), and Rival Schools (featuring Street Fighter's Sakura and her friends Hinata and Natsu in a story by Erik Ko and Omar Dogan)."
The Street Fighter portion of the Special helps give some more depth to Chun-Li’s character. It takes place shortly after the death of her father and shows how she dealt with the situation. It will also feature the pretty kick-ass fight between Chun-Li and Birdie that fans should get a kick out of. The Darkstalkers and Rival Schools stories are prequel stories that will help set the stage for the ongoing series. The Darkstalkers story will detail the origin of Morrigan (something fans have never seen before) and the events in the Rival Schools story will help show how it connects to the Street Fighter Universe.
Besides being the second most recognizable (and fantasized-about) female fighting game character (next to Chun-Li), [Darkstalkers’] Morrigan is a succubus—a vampire-like creature that feeds on the souls of humans through seduction or, sometimes, through their dreams. In Darkstalkers, she is the heir to the throne of one of the noble houses of the Demon World, but has grown restless under the over-protective eye of her father and has taken to entering the human world to enjoy the thrill of the ‘hunt’. Basically, the human world is her playground. Since the setting is not in the real world, the characters are all "Darkstalkers"—supernatural beings such as vampires, werewolves and undead zombies. That allows for even crazier powers and over-the-top moves than SF since SF’s characters, as powerful as they may be, need to be at least somewhat more based in reality. They can fly, teleport, summon, transform, etc., making the characters really interesting in translating into a comic. the fighting environment is not confined to human to the ground and the damage caused by the characters moves are much greater. Darkstalkers has truly a great cast that ranges from the horrific to the down-right wacky: A zombie guitarist, a cat girl, a succubus, a vampire prince, a bee-woman, a Frankenstein-like monster, a werewolf, a sasquatch, a merman… I guarantee comic fans have never seen a cast of characters quite like this.
Rival Schools, as fans would know, is a spin-off of Street Fighter. It's Capcom trying to push their fighting game to the next level with 3-D graphics instead of 2-D sprites. It's supposedly set in the same universe as SF, but is loosely connected. Only Sakura is in the game. But that's the game. RS has its own unique story that’s somewhat independent of the Street Fighter story. Sakura will switch to RS when RS starts. Sakura is basically a young high school girl who’s become obsessed with being like Ryu—she’s his self-professed #1 fan and pupil. She wears a headband like him and is always trying to imitate his techniques. Sometimes she really gets on his nerves, but deep down he has a soft spot for her and begins to look at her like a little sister. She’s actually one of my personal favorite characters to write since she helps balance Ryu’s one-minded, serious quest to perfect his training with a little light-heartedness. RS kicks off with a mystery as the top students in all a number of schools start to get attacked and begin to disappear, and the other students will band together to find out who is behind these threats,” Ko added. “It will be a fun ride, very different from your regular comic. While some of the characters in RS do fight in the style of Street Fighter, some duels could be in the form of sports instead of actual fights! It is like Shaolin Soccer meets Street Fighter! I am sure that the Rival Schools comic will redefine what action is to the comic readers.
A MUST HAVE for all Die Hard Street Fighter fans.
