HARVEY KURTZMAN MAD MAGAZINE HUGE HDCVR BOOK LITTLE ANNIE FANNY EC COMICS GENIUS
The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: The Mad Genius of Comics [Bargain Price] [Hardcover]
Harvey Kurtzman discovered Robert Crumb and gave Gloria Steinem her first job in publishing when he hired her as his assistant. Terry Gilliam also started at his side, met an unknown John Cleese in the process, and the genesis of Monty Python was formed. Art Spiegelman has stated on record that he owes his career to him. And he's one of Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner's favorite artists.
Harvey Kurtzman had a Midas touch for talent, but was himself an astonishingly talented and influential artist, writer, editor, and satirist. The creator of MAD and Playboy's "Little Annie Fanny" was called, "One of the most important figures in postwar America" by the New York Times. Kurtzman's groundbreaking "realistic" war comics of the early '50s and various satirical publications (MAD, Trump, Humbug, and Help!) had an immense impact on popular culture, inspiring a generation of underground cartoonists. Without Kurtzman, it's unlikely we'd have had Airplane, SNL, or National Lampoon.
The Art of Harvey Kurtzman is the first and only authorized celebration of this "Master of American Comics." This definitive book includes hundreds of never-before-seen illustrations, paintings, pencil sketches, newly discovered lost E.C. Comics layouts, color compositions, illustrated correspondence, and vintage photos from the rich Kurtzman archives

UNDERGROUND COMIX HUGE BOOK ROBERT CRUMB ZAP GILBERT SHELTON FREAK BROTHERS RARE
Rebel Visions: The Underground Comix Revolution [Paperback]
The first major historical work about the most influential artistic movement in America since the Beat Generation revolutionized literature.
This is a provocative chronicle of the guerilla art movement that changed comics and popular culture forever. This comprehensive book follows the movements of about 50 artists from 1963 to 1975, the heyday of the underground comix movement. Through interviews with the participants and other materials, Rebel Visions is the most intimate look ever at the people and events that forged the phenomenon known as underground comix, from New York to San Francisco, from the corn belt to deep in the heart of Texas, beginning that day in 1968 when R. Crumb debuted Zap #1 from a baby carriage in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. Rosenkranz spent over 30 years researching this book and acquiring the cooperation of every significant underground cartoonist who worked throughout this period, including Crumb, Gilbert (Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers) Shelton, Bill (Zippy) Griffith, Art (Maus) Spiegelman, Jack Jackson, S. Clay Wilson, Robert Williams, and many more. The book is illustrated with many never-before-seen drawings by all of the underground cartoonists and exclusive photographs.
The book is centered in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, where Crumb and the rest of his Zap cronies commingled with the rest of the city's countercultural scene, notably musicians like the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. The counterculture was omnipresent in San Francisco for those few years, with underground tabloids like Yellow Dog and the San Francisco Oracle steering the zeitgeist out-of-control, along with the music, political, and psychedelic drug scenes, all of which found a group of unlikely revolutionaries who drew cartoons right at the epicenter. This is the definitive book on a memorable and historic era.
From Publishers Weekly
Moving from year to year and town to town, through a revolving cast of artists and publishers, this story of revolutionary 60s art-making seeks to capture some of the frenzied scope and communal bonhomie that made the hippie counterculture click. The big names here are Robert Crumb, Robert Williams and Art Spiegelman, who emerge from the postwar era of conformity and repression into a period of broad cultural experimentation and self-discovery. Once the text moves beyond boilerplate mythmaking about San Francisco in the free love era, an interesting portrait begins to emerge-of ambitious, committed artists seeking to push their own boundaries, and with them the boundaries of society at large. In its detailed account of an art that celebrated sweating burnouts and libidinous creeps, the volume gives all the anecdotes and minutiae a reader might want. Lavishly illustrated with pages and panels from the underground press of the time (at least one per page), the book serves as a solid reference point for the developing styles of hippie draftsmanship. Crumb and co. round out a decade one-upping each other in degrees of explicitness and self-revelation, and leave behind a massive inheritance for future generations of doodlers to draw from. Illus.

Crumb is undoubtedly the foremost cartoonist of the latter 20th Century, and his sketchbooks - in which he has written and drawn continually from the early '60s to present - might rank as his finest achievement. Fantagraphics is proud to present these sketchbooks, in facsimile form, as a comprehensive series of volumes that will eventually run well over 4000 pages. Volume 8, covering 1971 through 1972, is the latest and it represents one of the more inquisitive and soul-searching periods in this phenomenal artist's life, as it coincides with Crumb's rise to fame and rejection of the late '60s hippie counterculture that made him famous
* Paperback: 160 pages
* Publisher: Fantagraphics Books;
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1560974087
* ISBN-13: 978-1560974086
Described by art critic Robert Hughes as "the Brueghel of the 20th century," Robert Crumb has become the only sixties counter culture artist to break through into the fine art world with great acclaim. Laura Hoptman, curator of the Carnegie International said, "Crumb is one of the most subversive and important voices to come out of America in the 20th century." He's one of the greatest draftsmen of our time.
"I never get bored seeing more work from a master who is so obsessively in love with the act of drawing; every image, even and otherwise prosaic still life from a 'pizzeria in St. Hyppolyte du Fort, ' captures the eye and imagination." -- Steven Heller "The New York Times Book Review"

SANDMAN DUSTCOVERS
NEIL GAIMAN and DAVE MCKEAN
LARGE ILLUSTRATED BOOK
THIS VERSION IS OUT OF PRINT.
HARD TO FIND COLLECTOR'S ITEMS BY NEIL GAIMAN AND DAVE MCKEAN.
GAIMAN AND MCKEAN'S FIRST WORK FOR DC COMICS.
THE FOLLOWING YEAR THEY WOULD BEGIN THEIR ACCLAIMED GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES SANDMAN.
Published by DC Comics.
* Paperback: 208 pages
* Publisher: Vertigo (July 1, 1998)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1563893878
* ISBN-13: 978-1563893872
* Product Dimensions: 10.6 x 7.8 x 0.5 inches
Written by NEIL GAIMAN (Sandman, Coraline, Neverwhere, American Gods, Books of Magic, Black Orchid, Miracleman).
Art by DAVE MCKEAN (Batman: Arkham Asylum, Sandman).
An amazing portfolio of dark and arresting imagery, THE SANDMAN DUST COVERS: THE COLLECTED SANDMAN COVERS presents the haunting artwork of this critically acclaimed and award-winning epic. Through these dynamic pieces, Dave McKean reflected the mesmerizing mythology, adult nature, and imaginative storytelling that made the story of Morpheus, the King of Dreams, such a groundbreaking series.
Featuring an exclusive Sandman tale, this collection also includes insightful and revealing cover commentaries by Sandman author Neil Gaiman.
If you are reading this, I will assume that you are already a fan of either Dave McKean in particular or Sandman in general.
Included are all the covers from the Sandman series minus the logo, publisher and price indicia, UPC codes, etc., thus showcasing these wonderful works of art in the format they deserve. Also included are some extra pages of art used to fill out the Sandman trade paperback collections. Even if you own the whole series, it is a worthwhile buy. But what makes the collection particularly unique is the inclusion of a brand new true story by Neil Gaiman and McKean about how the ficitonal world of the Sandman intruded upon their lives during the planning stage of the series.
As other reviewers have noted, the artwork is worth viewing on its own merits and deals with universal themes from the unconscious, so even if you don't know what the heck Sandman is it is worth a look. This is surrealism at its height by a master of many artistic media including painting, collage and computer graphics.
About the Author
Neil Gaiman wrote the award-winning graphic novel series The Sandman, and with Terry Pratchett, the award-winning novel Good Omens. His first book for children, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, illustrated by Dave McKean, hasn't yet won any awards, but was one of Newsweek's Best Children's Books of 1997. Angels & Visitations, a small press story collection, was nominated for a World Fantasy Award and won the International Horror Critics Guild Award for Best Collection, despite not having any horror in it. Well, hardly any.Born in England, he now makes his home in America, in a big dark house of uncertain location where he grows exotic pumpkins and accumulates computers and cats. He is currently at work turning his first novel Neverwhere into a film for Jim Henson films.

Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas (Paperback)
by Frank Thompson (Author)
1ST PRINT. 1ST EDITION SOFTCOVER. 1993.
Book Description
An in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at this 1993 animated holiday film.
This year's holiday animation release from Walt Disney is a real departure for the studio. The first major movie done entirely in three-dimensional stop-action animation, Nightmare before Christmas is the macabre story of Jack Skellington, "the Pumpkin King of Halloween," who is so delighted when he discovers Christmas that he decides to take over the role of Santa Claus. Tim Burton (Batman, Beetlejuice) came up with the idea 10 years ago when he worked as an animator at Disney during a more straitlaced era; since, things have loosened up enough at the studio for Burton to get the green light on his pet project. This volume, timed to coincide with Nightmare's theatrical release, chronicles the film from its inception through all stages of production, with commentary from Burton and the other creators. It's loaded with artwork ranging from Burton's original sketches through scenes from the finished film. The groundbreaking movie is a commercially and artistically risky venture, but considering the track record of Burton and the success of Disney's recent animated features, it might just become a holiday perennial; if so, libraries would do well to have this print tie-in on hand.
