What do you want for Christmas? Your answer could be influenced by Desire, cover featured on this year's VERTIGO: WINTER'S EDGE III, a holiday anthology sampler of current and upcoming projects from the acclaimed line of mature-readers titles. Desire takes the lead story as well as the cover (a line-art creation by THE INVISIBLES' Philip Bond) in a wintry tale written by THE SANDMAN's Neil Gaiman, with art by THE SANDMAN: LOVE STREET penciller Michael Zulli. This period piece is set during a blizzard that forces a train to tumble, leaving many hearts and lives completely shattered.

WATCHMEN artist Dave Gibbons writes and draws a holiday story of HELLBLAZER's John Constantine, who encounters a man called Herod, searching London for a prostitute who is heavy with child. Only Constantine can stop the killing, but does he want to?

Writer Peter Gross and artist Michael Lark (SUPERMAN: WAR OF THE WORLDS, SCENE OF THE CRIME) open THE BOOKS OF MAGIC for a tale of the ever-inquisitive Dead Boy Detectives (last seen in THE SANDMAN), who breach Tim Hunter's safe haven at the Inn at the End of the World, rolling into town as a human snowball.

CaitlĂn R. Kiernan, writer of THE DREAMING, teams with PROPOSITION PLAYER's Bill Willingham to share a Pleistocene winter's tale about one of Morpheus's former ravens.

The TRANSMETROPOLITAN team of writer Warren Ellis and artists Darick Robertson and Rodney Ramos spread holiday cheer as outlaw journalist Spider Jerusalem manages to have a millennial moment in the snow, even in a city where no one seems to know what year it is.

And the 100 BULLETS writer-artist duo of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso tell a story of the 1960s, where the recipient of Agent Graves's special briefcase and gun may be the missing link in the ultimate conspiracy theory.

WINTER'S EDGE III also includes holiday-themed previews of three new ongoing titles planned for release next year:

* SWAMP THING, written by Brian Vaughn (X-Men, Wolverine) with art by Roger Petersen (SubHuman) and Joe Rubinstein, which reintroduces Tefe Holland as the 18-year-old half-Elemental, half-human searches out expert advice about her strange new powers, along the way learning about the deadly effects of mistletoe;
* DEADENDERS, written by Ed Brubaker (SCENE OF THE CRIME) with art by Warren Pleece (TRUE FAITH) and Richard Case (THE SANDMAN), which follows an unforgettable group of dead-end teenagers roaming through a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland;
* and THE GREAT SATAN, written by Jamie Delano (HELLBLAZER) with art by newcomer Goran Sadzuka, which introduces a clan of immortals in the American West.
* Completing the Special is an interview with writer Jeph Loeb and artist Chris Bachalo on their new VERTIGO miniseries, THE WITCHING HOUR.

SWAMP THING ANNUAL 6!

Written by Neil Gaiman!

Drawn by Mike Mignola!
OUT OF PRINT.

HARD TO FIND COLLECTORS ITEM FEATURING THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN TWO INCREDIBLE TALENTS!!!

This is one of Neil Gaiman's earliest comics written for DC in 1989, and actually preceded his work on The Sandman. Even back then Gaiman shows what a fresh talent and unique storyteller he is.

Neil Gaiman was originally supposed to take over the writing duties on the ongoing Swamp Thing comic book series, following in the footsteps of his mentor Alan Moore, however editorial interference prevented that from happening. But not before he had written this Annual that foreshadowed what could have been a legendary run on one of the all time best horror/monster comic books.

Gaiman uses this issue to revive BROTHER POWER THE GEEK, one of the most interesting an unusual characters that DC Comics has ever published. First published in his own title in the sixties, Brother Power was a mannequin that has come to life and joined the hippies in their peace and love movement. Decades later, Gaiman chronicles his return!

This issue is also notable for featuring a story drawn by MIKE MIGNOLA, the creator of the very popular HELLBOY comic book series (which became a popular live action film and animated series).

This story was created very early in both their careers in comics, but you can still see the talent between both these men in their collaboration together. A spook and philosophical meandering through the forest as The Floronic Man ponders the nature of good and evil as it applies to plant-life. Beautifully and lavishly rendered by Mignola's unique art-style.

Also features a fantastic PAINTED cover by John Totleben, one of the best Swamp Thing and horror artists of all time.

NEIL GAIMAN: SWEENEY TODD in the MICHAEL ZULLI SKETCHBOOK

NEIL GAIMAN items for sale in the POP CULTURE SHOP eCRATER Store!

NEIL GAIMAN Items for sale in the POPCULTURE SHOP eBAY Store

We feature many NEIL GAIMAN comic books, graphic novels, prose books and collectibles in our stores.  One of the most interesting items is NOODLES, an Out of Print Sketchbook by popular Sandman artist Michael Zulli.

The book not only features an introduction written by Gaiman, but is most notable because there is an entire section of sketches based on Gaiman and Zulli's "Lost" Graphic Novel SWEENEY TODD.  Based on the macabre story of "The Demon Barber of Fleet Street".

This gem was published by Kevin "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" Eastman's wildly experimental TUNDRA publishing company in 1991 as a series of Sketchbooks featuring work by alternative and underground comic book artists.  Soon after it was published, Tundra went bankrupt and this paperback artbook remains Out of Print.

SWEENEY TODD was to be a serialized comic book story beginning with volume 7 of the legendary TABOO Graphic Novel horror anthologies.  TABOO was self published for most of it's run by STEVE BISSETTE, best known as one of the primary artists on ALAN MOORE's revolutionary SWAMP THING run.  TABOO was where Moore and EDDIE CAMPBELL serialized their Jack the Ripper story FROM HELL, which eventually was collected into a highly acclaimed Graphic Novel and adapted into a movie starring JOHNNY DEPP.   Depp of course would also star in the adaptation of STEPHEN SONDHEIM's musical version of SWEENEY TODD.

Only one installment of Gaiman's and Zulli's SWEENEY TODD ever saw print before TABOO ended it's run (also due to the collapse of Tundra).  TABOO Volume 7 ran a prologue story which featured Gaiman himself researching the historical context for SWEENEY TODD.  There was also a SWEENEY TODD "Penny Dreadful" published, a 16 page promotional pamphlet that accompanied TABOO Volume 6.

One can only imagine how wonderful and creepy Gaiman's and Zulli's SWEENEY TODD Graphic Novel would have been if it had ever been completed and collected.  Although there appears to be no plans for Gaiman or Zulli to complete this work, we can always hope and dream.  After all, another "Lost" Graphic Novel from TABOO was recently completed and published... ALAN MOORE's and MELINDA GEBBIE's LOST GIRLS!

In regards to NOODLES.  This sketchbook also contains many other highlights from MICHAEL ZULLI's career.  There are animal sketches for his earliest indie comic book, the eco-fable PUMA BLUES.  HP LOVECRAFT illustrations.  Sketches for another "Lost" comic book based on the LITTLE BROTHERS novels by author RICK HAUTALA.  Studies based on a collaboration with RAMSAY CAMPBELL. Prep work for his TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES run.

Also of note is his SWAMP THING Sketches.  Zulli had finished drawing most of his controversial issue written by RICK VIETCH which featured Swamp Thing's time traveling encounter with JESUS!  At the 11th hour, DC COMICS got cold feet and the issue was pulled.  Yet another "Lost" Zulli project we hope will one day finally see print, particularly since DC Vertigo has become much more daring in later years with comics such as PREACHER.

Finally, we have some great SANDMAN sketches.  Zulli is probably best known for illustrating the SANDMAN story that introduced the immortal character of Hob Galding in Sandman #13.  Zulli would later return to the title to illustrate the final Sandman story arc entitled THE WAKE.  That story arc should be of interest to those who enjoy this sketchbook because the illustrations in that volume were reproduced and colored directly from his delicate pencil work (rather than inked as is the norm with traditional comic books)!

Noodles is Highly Recommended!
