For a comic book based on a line of toys, The Transformers retained its popularity for a remarkable length of time. The comic’s initial run lasted for over seven years—eighty issues in all. In that time, the heroes—a team of mechanical beings called the Autobots—waged a desperate war against the evil transformers known as the Decepticons, led by the dreaded Megatron.

As this new series begins, the Autobots come to realize that their old war against the Decepticons was only an insignificant part of their true struggle. Thousands of years ago, when the Autobots left their home planet of Cybertron to lie dormant on Earth, the Cybertronian Empire began expanding throughout the galaxy. The Decepticons they left behind were those which they had considered unworthy for true rule. These were the villains that the Autobots had done such fierce battle with in the first series—now they had to take on the Empire itself!
