Back in the early seventies, filmmaker Tobe Hooper made a movie about a group of travelers who encounter a strange family living in Texas who turn out to be cannibals with forks and knives in hand waiting for their next meal. This movie was called The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and became a horror classic. Years later, two sequels were made that were not so classic. This title was released closely following the third film and is probably the best offering dealing with this property since the original. The story is gripping, adequately drawn and is in vivid color—though short-lived. If your idea of entertainment is seeing a woman close up as she is getting her head bashed in by a sledgehammer, well then pull out the crumpets because this comic book is your cup of tea.

McCarty has sorted through the last 30 years to come up with what he considers the 50 "contemporary classic" horror films. Each short, insightful article covers the film's importance and background. McCarty discusses the actors, directors, producers, writers, and composers and their involvement in this and other films. He evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of each film, often in terms of its impact when released and today. The Hammer Film, Curse of Frankenstein (1957), starts off the chronological listing of films. While there may be some debate as to why certain films were included and others excluded, most of the films are undeniably some of the best ever made: Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, The Exorcist, Jaws, Alien, The Shining , etc. Despite McCarty's slight bias toward the Hammer Film productions of the 1950s and 1960s and the "splatter" films of recent years, he has produced a well-researched, readable homage to the horror film.

Never before (or probably ever again) will there ever be such a comprehensive book on horror films! This is quite an accomplishment. A must read for anyone interested in great movies, horror or otherwise!

The premise of this one-shot involves a quartet of friends in the midst of a cross-country trip who run afoul of Sheriff Hoyt, who forcibly takes them to the Hewitt house, where Leatherface kills them all except one, a girl named Lucy, whom he knocks unconscious; Leatherface, when Lucy awakens, puts on a mask created from her boyfriend's face and hammers one of his own masks onto her before forcing her to dance with him as she succumbs to her injuries.
