BOOKS OF MAGIC - NEIL GAIMAN, JOHN BOLTON and PAUL JOHNSON

7 years before HARRY POTTER was first published in 1997, Neil Gaiman created the story of a
British boy named Tim Hunter, who wears glasses and has a pet owl. He lived in the mundane world until a group of mysterious strangers arrive to inform him that he is a magician with a destiny involving the fate of the world!

Note: one of his teachers on this magical Journey is the occult detective John Constantine, Hellblazer. Potrayed by Keanu Reeves in the smash hit feature film CONSTANTINE.

V3: Doctor Occult takes Tim on a journey into the other mystic realms, including The Dreaming from The Sandman, and the Lands of Faerie, including The Market from STARDUST. Also featuring appearances by Morpheus The Sandman himself, Cain and Abel, Baba Yaga, Warlord, Nightmaster, Amethyst, Titania Queen of Faerie, The Demon Etrigan, and many more!

ONE OF GAIMAN'S EARLIEST WORKS FOR DC COMICS, FOLLOWING HIS ACCLAIMED GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES SANDMAN.

Published by DC Comics.

This is the hard to find first printings of the original BOOKS OF MAGIC with full color lavishly painted illustrations.

This is the RARE original 1990 published version of Gaiman's BOOKS OF MAGIC, and was never sold in any mass market retail outlets. It was only available to purchase through comic book specialty shops.

Written by NEIL GAIMAN (Sandman, Coraline, Neverwhere, American Gods, Books of Magic, Black Orchid, Miracleman).

This squarebound book is in brand new condition and measures approx 6.5" x 10" inches, and is printed on high quality paper to enhance the delicate and beautifully painted artwork.

Book Description
From one of the most highly recognised and award winning comic writers on the scene today, Neil Gaiman (Sandman, Death, Violent Cases), and his collaborator, innovative artist Paul Johnson, comes a haunting and stylish exploration of a young boy taken on a journey through time to discover his magical destiny. Timothy Hunter is just like any other thirteen-year-old boy in London . . . except for the tiny fact that he might be the most powerful magician of his time.

A quartet of fallen mystics dubbed the "Trench Coat Brigade" is introduced in this first collection of the adventures of Timothy Hunter. John Constanine, the Phantom Stranger, Dr. Occult and Mister E take Hunter on a tour of the magical realms. Along the way he's introduced to the greatest practitioners of magic and must choose whether or not to join their ranks.

Long before Harry Potter went to Hogwarts, a young English lad in glasses learned of magic from the pen of Neil Gaiman.

Timothy Hunter, a fairly typical, aimless 12-year-old boy, meets a quartet of mysterious, powerful men who show him worlds beyond understanding. Possibly destined to be the greatest magician of his age, Tim is exposed to wonders and possibilities, alternate realities and the end of all existence.

His guides on the journey are the so-called "trenchcoat brigade" -- the Phantom Stranger, Dr. Occult, John "Hellblazer" Constantine and the sightless Mister E -- although other magical luminaries, from Dr. Fate to Zatanna, will chime in from time to time. His adventures take him from Faerie to Hell and many dimensions in between, from the start of time to the final curtain. He'll see the beauty and ugliness of magic, discover the power of names and the consequences of gifts. He'll meet Death before his time, and he'll learn a little bit more about trust and betrayal.
The Books of Magic is still a delightful, eye-opening story about magical potential. Gaiman, who was already deep into his Sandman mythos by this time, unleashed a new force on the world of comics with this book, which quickly became a successful, ongoing Vertigo series.

About the Author
Neil Gaiman wrote the award-winning graphic novel series The Sandman, and with Terry Pratchett, the award-winning novel Good Omens. His first book for children, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, illustrated by Dave McKean, hasn't yet won any awards, but was one of Newsweek's Best Children's Books of 1997. Angels & Visitations, a small press story collection, was nominated for a World Fantasy Award and won the International Horror Critics Guild Award for Best Collection, despite not having any horror in it. Well, hardly any.Born in England, he now makes his home in America, in a big dark house of uncertain location where he grows exotic pumpkins and accumulates computers and cats. He is currently at work turning his first novel Neverwhere into a film for Jim Henson films.

Review
“A cloth of rare delight.”
--James Gurney, author of Dinotopia, on The Book of Ballads

“[Vess’s] exquisitely detailed art delightfully recalls the Pre-Raphaelites here, Aubrey Beardsley there and elsewhere Winsor McCay or Gustave DorĂ©…Here Vess reaches the peak of his art, standing proudly with the 19th- and early 20th-century illustrators who influence him.”
--Publishers Weekly on The Book of Ballads

"If you're a fan of both traditional folk music and comic books, there's no way you should miss Charles Vess' Book of Ballads."
--Dirty Linen

"Vess's work is as slyly subversive as the young Rossetti, Morris, and Burne-Jones . . . and it has captivated large audiences for many of the same reasons. By wedding mythic and folkloric material to a distinctly modern form of visual storytelling, this artist is keeping myth alive, and creating a magic all his own."
--Terri Windling on The Book of Ballads

Ballads were little known to the literate world until the 18th century, when scholars began writing them down. Since then, they've received attention from folklorists, folksingers and, now, cartoonist Vess (Stardust; Rose). Vess and his collaborators put a little meat on the ballads' often bare-bones stories, adding fantastic elements not in the originals ("Barbara Allen"), giving them modern settings ("Twa Corbies"), sexing them up ("Savoy") and otherwise putting their own mark on them. Vess approaches them with an appropriately elegant style. His exquisitely detailed art delightfully recalls the Pre-Raphaelites here, Aubrey Beardsley there and elsewhere Winsor McCay or Gustave Doré. The best stories involve passion, whether celebrated ("King Henry" and "Savoy") or cautioned against ("The Demon Lover" and "The Three Lovers"), though even the least effective stories are still beautiful. "The Three Lovers" is especially noteworthy; in it, Vess makes clever, subversive use of comics language, presenting a story that pretends to be a play (complete with proscenium arch). "Tam Lin" may be the collection's consummate piece. In it, Vess goes for straight illustration, with each illustrated page facing a page of verse. Here Vess reaches the peak of his art, standing proudly with the 19th- and early 20th-century illustrators who influence him.

"The Tempest", the companion piece to "A Midsummer Night's Dream", from the third collection, Dream Country. "The Tempest" is more reflective than "A Midsummer Night's Dream", and features less of the original play, though it echoes it cleverly in several ways and sequences. It is principally about Gaiman's Morpheus and his issues with himself and his place in things. Here we see in detail the Morpheus only briefly fleshed in former issues - the vulnerable, emotional, confused Dream King. Gaiman uses "The Tempest", a play fundamentally about change, endings, and new beginnings, to finish the series.

The Tempest. Illustrated by fantasy master Charles Vess, whose art is full of emotion and the sights of the period. This, the story of the world's greatest writer's last work, which is itself, the story of a powerful magician who breaks his books and leaves his island. Will Shakespeare himself, is faced with the weight of old age, his distance from his wife, and his daughter being courted by a boy he does not approve of. He deals with these by getting drunk with Ben Jonson, and pouring his heart and soul into The Tempest. Finished the play, Will accompanies the King of Dreams to his castle for a drink, and to ask him why this was the play that Morpheus wanted written about him. Because Morpheus, unlike some of his family and unlike Prospero, the hero of The Tempest, will never leave his island. Although he is the Prince of Stories, he will never have one written about him. And, I guess, that's where we came in, fellow readers.

Asked why he likes comics more than other forms of storytelling Gaiman said “One of the joys of comics has always been the knowledge that it was, in many ways, untouched ground. It was virgin territory. When I was working on Sandman, I felt a lot of the time that I was actually picking up a machete and heading out into the jungle. I got to write in places and do things that nobody had ever done before. When I’m writing novels I’m painfully aware that I’m working in a medium that people have been writing absolutely jaw-droppingly brilliant things for, you know, three-four thousand years now. You know, you can go back. We have things like The Golden Ass. And you go, well, I don’t know that I’m as good as that and that’s two and a half thousand years old. But with comics I felt like — I can do stuff nobody has ever done. I can do stuff nobody has ever thought of. And I could and it was enormously fun.”

Book Description
In the sleepy English countryside at the dawn of the Victorian era lies the village of Wall - a secluded hamlet that derives its name from an imposing stone barrier that surrounds a fertile grassland. The lesiurely pace in Wall is disrupted only once every nine years as the mortal and magical meer upon the meadow for a market fair like no other.

It is here in Wall that young Tristan Thorn loses his heart to the town beauty - a woman who is as cold and distant as the star she and Tristan see fall from the sky on a crisp October evening. To gain the hand of his beloved, Tristan rashly vows to fetch the fallen star and embarks upon a lover's quest that willl carry him over the ancient wall and into a world beyond his wildest imaginings...
Stardust is an utterly charming fairy tale in the tradition of The Princess Bride and The Neverending Story. Neil Gaiman, creator of the darkly elegant Sandman comics and author of The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, tells the story of young Tristran Thorn and his adventures in the land of Faerie. One fateful night, Tristran promises his beloved that he will retrieve a fallen star for her from beyond the Wall that stands between their rural English town (called, appropriately, Wall) and the Faerie realm. No one ever ventures beyond the Wall except to attend an enchanted flea market that is held every nine years (and during which, unbeknownst to him, Tristran was conceived). But Tristran bravely sets out to fetch the fallen star and thus win the hand of his love. His adventures in the magical land will keep you turning pages as fast as you can--he and the star escape evil old witches, deadly clutching trees, goblin press-gangs, and the scheming sons of the dead Lord of Stormhold. The story is by turns thrillingly scary and very funny. You'll love goofy, earnest Tristran and the talking animals, gnomes, magic trees, and other irresistible denizens of Faerie that he encounters in his travels. Stardust is a perfect read-aloud book, a brand-new fairy tale you'll want to share with a kid, or maybe hoard for yourself.

A tale of romance, magic, and glamour, the multiple award-winning NEIL GAIMAN AND CHARLES VESS' STARDUST is a spellbinding story, lavishly illustrated and lyrically written by two masters of their craft.

In August 1999 Stardust was awarded the prestigious Mythopoeic Award as best novel for adults.
