Vertigo’s interesting collection of upcoming projects. The list begins with Mobfire, a series that mixes the supernatural with a venerable order of British gangsters.

Next comes a trio of one-shots for the Vertigo Voices series. First of them is the disturbing Face, wherein a famous artist hires a renowned plastic surgeon to create a living “masterpiece.” Grant Morrison follows with teens in search of deadly thrills in Kill Your Boyfriend. Last is Tainted, a dark tale about darker secrets.

Shadows Fall is the story of a man in search of his lost shadow. Unlike Peter Pan’s, however, this missing shadow seems intent on murder. Mr. Punch is a wonderful graphic novel by the dream team of McKean and Neil Gaiman (Sandman). The Rave closes out with previews of the current Vertigo line, plus a new Books of Magic story.

One of the more exciting events of late 1992 was the launching of DC’s Vertigo line of comics for mature readers. This line would become a critical favorite among comics readers, praised for its innovation and strong storytelling.

What do you want for Christmas? Your answer could be influenced by Desire, cover featured on this year's VERTIGO: WINTER'S EDGE III, a holiday anthology sampler of current and upcoming projects from the acclaimed line of mature-readers titles. Desire takes the lead story as well as the cover (a line-art creation by THE INVISIBLES' Philip Bond) in a wintry tale written by THE SANDMAN's Neil Gaiman, with art by THE SANDMAN: LOVE STREET penciller Michael Zulli. This period piece is set during a blizzard that forces a train to tumble, leaving many hearts and lives completely shattered.

WATCHMEN artist Dave Gibbons writes and draws a holiday story of HELLBLAZER's John Constantine, who encounters a man called Herod, searching London for a prostitute who is heavy with child. Only Constantine can stop the killing, but does he want to?

Writer Peter Gross and artist Michael Lark (SUPERMAN: WAR OF THE WORLDS, SCENE OF THE CRIME) open THE BOOKS OF MAGIC for a tale of the ever-inquisitive Dead Boy Detectives (last seen in THE SANDMAN), who breach Tim Hunter's safe haven at the Inn at the End of the World, rolling into town as a human snowball.

Caitlín R. Kiernan, writer of THE DREAMING, teams with PROPOSITION PLAYER's Bill Willingham to share a Pleistocene winter's tale about one of Morpheus's former ravens.

The TRANSMETROPOLITAN team of writer Warren Ellis and artists Darick Robertson and Rodney Ramos spread holiday cheer as outlaw journalist Spider Jerusalem manages to have a millennial moment in the snow, even in a city where no one seems to know what year it is.

And the 100 BULLETS writer-artist duo of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso tell a story of the 1960s, where the recipient of Agent Graves's special briefcase and gun may be the missing link in the ultimate conspiracy theory.

WINTER'S EDGE III also includes holiday-themed previews of three new ongoing titles planned for release next year:

* SWAMP THING, written by Brian Vaughn (X-Men, Wolverine) with art by Roger Petersen (SubHuman) and Joe Rubinstein, which reintroduces Tefe Holland as the 18-year-old half-Elemental, half-human searches out expert advice about her strange new powers, along the way learning about the deadly effects of mistletoe;
* DEADENDERS, written by Ed Brubaker (SCENE OF THE CRIME) with art by Warren Pleece (TRUE FAITH) and Richard Case (THE SANDMAN), which follows an unforgettable group of dead-end teenagers roaming through a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland;
* and THE GREAT SATAN, written by Jamie Delano (HELLBLAZER) with art by newcomer Goran Sadzuka, which introduces a clan of immortals in the American West.
* Completing the Special is an interview with writer Jeph Loeb and artist Chris Bachalo on their new VERTIGO miniseries, THE WITCHING HOUR.

NEIL GAIMAN CHILDREN'S CRUSADE 2 COMIC BOOKS #1 & #2 SANDMAN DEADBOY DETECTIVES!

Neil Gaiman's THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE #1 and #2.

RARE AND OUT OF PRINT! DOUBLE SIZED COMIC BOOKS!

WRITTEN BY NEIL GAIMAN.

An epic storyline featuring some of Neil Gaiman's most popular creations. The Deadboy Detectives from THE SANDMAN team up with TIM HUNTER from BOOKS OF MAGIC, and THE BLACK ORCHID.

In 1212, yet another Crusade was ending in bloody failure. As the story goes: a monk cried out, saying that God was not allowing the Christians to prevail, since their souls were already stained with sin. What was needed, he said, was an army of innocents—a children’s crusade. The call went out, and fifty thousand girls and boys answered. They sailed on one hundred ships toward the Holy Land. But on the way, a storm arose and wrecked all but two of the ships. 49,000 children died in one night. The remaining two ships delivered their passengers into slavery and pain. But for a few of these doomed children, there was salvation, of sorts, as they escaped into another place.

Centuries later, it seems that an entire village of children has also found the doorway into that other world. Just as the Pied Piper stole the children of Hamelin, someone—or something—has caused every child in tiny Flaxdown to disappear…into a mysterious world for lost children.

Dream - The Heart of a Star

Art by Miguelanxo Prado

In the far distant past, Dream and his new romantic interest Killalla of the Glow travel to a meeting of astronomical phenomena. The mortal Killalla is astonished to learn that the beings with which she is mingling and chit-chatting with rather comfortably are, in fact, the very stars, galaxies, and dimensions which comprise her universe. After an encounter with her world's own sun, Sto-Oa, Killalla and the star fall in love, possibly thanks to Desire's powers, as the distraught and heartbroken Dream watches on.

This story showcases a number of things mentioned in The Sandman series but never before illustrated. Here, Death is a cold unmerciful character and Delight has not yet become Delirium. The roots of Dream's conflicts with Desire (in the beginning of this story, they are very close) are illustrated for the first time, as are the roots of the rules forbidding the Endless from becoming romantically involved with mortals. The first aspect of Despair also appears in the story, being quite different in appearance and more sociable than her latter aspect.

In addition, other DC comics characters and beings are suggested in the story. The character Killalla is from the planet Oa (Although technically, at this point in time, she should be from planet Maltus), and is an ancestor of the Guardians of the Universe, who go on to form the Green Lantern Corps. Her power to manipulate green energy can be seen as an evolution towards the creation of the Green Lantern's power. Despair has a conversation with a red giant star named Rao about the creation of life on an unstable world and the possibility of a lone survivor to continually mourn the destruction of that world. This is an allusion to the history of Superman; Rao is the red giant sun around which Superman's homeworld of Krypton once orbited, as well as the Kryptonian God. (The colors of the stars in the story follow the DC Universe's standards, not the actual star life cycle.)

The story is narrated by the Sun, depicted within the comic as a very young and clumsy star known by his Latin name Sol. He is telling the tale to the Earth at a time when she is still sleeping and has no life on her. Dream converses with Sol about the possibility of life on one of his planets. Sol expresses an interest in them resembling Killalla, setting the stage for our own existence as well as providing a possible reason why Dream seems to favor Earth as opposed to any other planet in the universe.

Asked why he likes comics more than other forms of storytelling Gaiman said “One of the joys of comics has always been the knowledge that it was, in many ways, untouched ground. It was virgin territory. When I was working on Sandman, I felt a lot of the time that I was actually picking up a machete and heading out into the jungle. I got to write in places and do things that nobody had ever done before. When I’m writing novels I’m painfully aware that I’m working in a medium that people have been writing absolutely jaw-droppingly brilliant things for, you know, three-four thousand years now. You know, you can go back. We have things like The Golden Ass. And you go, well, I don’t know that I’m as good as that and that’s two and a half thousand years old. But with comics I felt like — I can do stuff nobody has ever done. I can do stuff nobody has ever thought of. And I could and it was enormously fun.”

JOHN CONSTANTINE HELLBLAZER #1 COMIC BOOK!

cover designed by DAVE MCKEAN.

THIS VERSION IS LONG OUT OF PRINT.

This fantastic series traverses Heaven, Hell, Limbo, and earth, following fallen angels, escaped demons, and everyone in between.

Hellblazer is the dark story of demon-foiler John Constantine, who first appeared in Saga of the Swamp Thing, created by ALAN MOORE (WATCHMEN). The English street mage thumbs his nose at both heaven and hell, and meddling in all manner of celestial affairs.

Product Description
Following in the vivid footsteps of Swamp Thing and Sandman, here is an occult thriller that teeters between our world and the next, during one man's non-stop adventure. Bedraggled medium and exorcist John Constantine prowls the outskirts of society in search of inner peace, only to find himself the lone defender of our world from the forces of evil.

Filled with incredible atmosphere, smart British-working-class political sensibilities, and just the right amount of levity you'd expect from an insouciant, somewhat amoral occult-dabbler.

Written by NEIL GAIMAN (Sandman, Coraline, Neverwhere, American Gods, Books of Magic, Black Orchid, Miracleman).

Art by DAVE MCKEAN (Batman: Arkham Asylum, Sandman).

An amazing portfolio of dark and arresting imagery, THE SANDMAN DUST COVERS: THE COLLECTED SANDMAN COVERS presents the haunting artwork of this critically acclaimed and award-winning epic. Through these dynamic pieces, Dave McKean reflected the mesmerizing mythology, adult nature, and imaginative storytelling that made the story of Morpheus, the King of Dreams, such a groundbreaking series.

Featuring an exclusive Sandman tale, this collection also includes insightful and revealing cover commentaries by Sandman author Neil Gaiman.

If you are reading this, I will assume that you are already a fan of either Dave McKean in particular or Sandman in general.

Included are all the covers from the Sandman series minus the logo, publisher and price indicia, UPC codes, etc., thus showcasing these wonderful works of art in the format they deserve. Also included are some extra pages of art used to fill out the Sandman trade paperback collections. Even if you own the whole series, it is a worthwhile buy. But what makes the collection particularly unique is the inclusion of a brand new true story by Neil Gaiman and McKean about how the ficitonal world of the Sandman intruded upon their lives during the planning stage of the series.

As other reviewers have noted, the artwork is worth viewing on its own merits and deals with universal themes from the unconscious, so even if you don't know what the heck Sandman is it is worth a look. This is surrealism at its height by a master of many artistic media including painting, collage and computer graphics.

HUMAN TARGET #1 Comic Book
HARD TO FIND COLLECTORS ITEMS FOR THE FANS OF THE TELEVISION SERIES THE HUMAN TARGET!

Featuring a cover by TIM BRADSTREET

Did you know that THE HUMAN TARGET is based on a popular comic book series published by DC COMICS? (who bring you the adventures of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman)

Christopher Chance, a.k.a. the Human Target first appeared as a backup feature in Action Comics. A master of disguise, the aptly named Chance portrayed people who were marked for death in order to flush out the threat. A television movie prompted his return in a special edition in 1991, Human Target Special.

Although his adventures were perilous by their nature (standing in for someone with a price on their head), the danger was fairly physical and straightforward. But when a title is adapted for the Vertigo imprint, things are rarely straightforward. As with most Vertigo titles, the emotional aspect is an important element, but not so overpowering that there is no room for a sexy female assassin or a vicious drug dealer. This series depicts the psychological risks of so completely immersing oneself in a new persona and denying one’s own identity that reality becomes a matter of perception.

Book Description
From one of the most highly recognised and award winning comic writers on the scene today, Neil Gaiman (Sandman, Death, Violent Cases), and his collaborator, innovative artist Bo Hampton, comes a haunting and stylish exploration of a young boy taken on a journey through time to discover his magical destiny. Timothy Hunter is just like any other thirteen-year-old boy in London . . . except for the tiny fact that he might be the most powerful magician of his time.

A quartet of fallen mystics dubbed the "Trench Coat Brigade" is introduced in this first collection of the adventures of Timothy Hunter. John Constanine, the Phantom Stranger, Dr. Occult and Mister E take Hunter on a tour of the magical realms. Along the way he's introduced to the greatest practitioners of magic and must choose whether or not to join their ranks.

Long before Harry Potter went to Hogwarts, a young English lad in glasses learned of magic from the pen of Neil Gaiman.

Timothy Hunter, a fairly typical, aimless 12-year-old boy, meets a quartet of mysterious, powerful men who show him worlds beyond understanding. Possibly destined to be the greatest magician of his age, Tim is exposed to wonders and possibilities, alternate realities and the end of all existence.

His guides on the journey are the so-called "trenchcoat brigade" -- the Phantom Stranger, Dr. Occult, John "Hellblazer" Constantine and the sightless Mister E -- although other magical luminaries, from Dr. Fate to Zatanna, will chime in from time to time. His adventures take him from Faerie to Hell and many dimensions in between, from the start of time to the final curtain. He'll see the beauty and ugliness of magic, discover the power of names and the consequences of gifts. He'll meet Death before his time, and he'll learn a little bit more about trust and betrayal.
The Books of Magic is still a delightful, eye-opening story about magical potential. Gaiman, who was already deep into his Sandman mythos by this time, unleashed a new force on the world of comics with this book, which quickly became a successful, ongoing Vertigo series.

D-DAY DODGERS tells the story of the thousands of war-weary, and largely forgotten, young Allied soldiers fighting in the blood, dust, snow and mud of the Italian country side while the world's attention was riveted by the war in France. This action-packed and powerful story stands as moving tribute to the too-often mistreated men fighting in the trenches of any war.
The "D-Day Dodgers" fighting in Italy are accused of cowardice for escaping the "real" war.

based apon "The Ballard of the D-Day Dodgers" Which Lady Astor was accused of making an offensive speech on the men who continued to fight up Italy's country side towards Germany instead of Fighting on the Beaches of Normandy. There's never been proof she made light of those who continued the advancement up Italy as bad. But, shortly someone made the infamous Ballard of these brave soldiers which pokes at Lady Astor comments rather true or not.
