VINTAGE COLLECTOR'S ITEM! PUBLISHED IN 1991.

For fans of FREDDY KRUEGER!

Featuring Full Color Painted artwork printed on high quality paper! This comic is as gorey and frightening as the Nightmare Films themselves!

The movie “Nightmare On Elm Street” introduced moviegoers to Freddy, a dead madman who stalks the dreams of Springwood’s citizens. Surprisingly popular, it spawned a number of “Elm Street” sequels, and Freddy even hosted a TV horror show.

Innovation’s comic title continues the saga of Springwood.

The claw-handed deadman named Freddy got his start in the movie “Nightmare on Elm Street.” Now after numerous sequels, he’s about to meet his end. Really.

In Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, we go back to Springwood to discover the shocking start of Krueger’s private story. Working through dreams, Freddy manages to round up the final surviving child of the Springwood parents who killed him, as well as his own now-grown daughter. Freddy gathers up these “loose ends” for a final battle in his world of nightmare.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET #1 MAGAZINE (Comics)

VINTAGE FIRST ISSUE COLLECTOR'S ITEM! PUBLISHED IN 1991.

For fans of FREDDY KRUEGER!

In 1989 Marvel Comics gave Freddy Krueger is own black and white magazine. The magazine only lasted for two issues due to the outcry from angry parents. Marvel wanted no part of the controversy and cancelled the book before the sales figures for the first issue came in. Apparently, none of the angry parents noticed the “Illustrated Horror for Mature Readers” warning on the covers.

The issues that did make it on to newsstands were written by Steve Gerber. Tony DeZuniga provided the killer art work while Alfredo Alcala handled finishes. Rich Buckler also contributed art to the first issue. The beautiful covers are by Joe Jusko.

Screams and Nightmares: The Films of Wes Craven (SOFTCOVER)
by Brian Robb

HUGE BOOK!

Until Scream (1996), director Craven's mainstream fame rested on the seven Nightmare on Elm Street films, whose level of invention and effects elevated them above the Halloween and Friday the 13th slasher series. Through personal interviews, secondary sources, and a wealth of photos, film-idol biographer Robb provides a sometimes worshipful picture of the Ohio-born, Fundamentalist-raised director. We witness a progression from low-budget shockers Last House on the Left (1972) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977) to the better-funded and -crafted The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988), The People Under the Stairs (1991), and Vampire in Brooklyn (1995). Welcome attention is given the unsuccessful but enjoyable Swamp Thing (1982), although Robb forgets to discuss its lead character when examining a hallmark of Craven's work: the resourceful heroine. Just as shocking as Craven's subject matter is Robb's portrayal of how the Motion Picture Association of America sanitizes horror films.

Robb scans Craven's film work from the seminal Last House on the Left (1972) to Scream 2 (1997). Featuring stills from cult favorites (e.g., The Hills Have Eyes) as well as Craven's more mainstream hits and sporting a reasonably detailed filmography, the book is essentially what the fans have wanted. One chapter is lavished on the entire Nightmare on Elm Street series, though Craven was not directly involved in any episode after Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987). Craven's ability to consistently craft box-office hits has guaranteed him ever larger budgets, despite which his features have retained their ooky charm. Robb is unremittingly positive about Craven, without sacrificing biographical value in tantalizing tidbits, such as that Craven's childhood was spent in a "deeply religious working class Baptist family," that give heart to amateur Freudians and other analysts. Based on interviews with Craven and the reporting of such genre-specific journals as Cinefantastique, GoreZone, and the always entertaining Fangoria, Robb's concoction is entertaining and informative about a recognized cinematic auteur.

Book Description
Writer, producer, and director Wes Craven has successfully tapped into the horror vein for over thirty years, serving up scary, funny, hip thrillers that demand a second look. His films have been both critical and commercial successes, most notably Nightmare on Elm Street, which spawned a series of sequels and made Craven (and his creation, Freddy Krueger) an international sensation. But Craven's films have also become classics in a field that he continues to reinvent--the horror genre is still reeling from the impact of his most recent project, the brilliant Scream series.

With Screams and Nightmares, author Brian J. Robb covers Craven's entire career, from his low-budget beginnings to his most recent box office hits, from the banned thriller The Last House on the Left and the cult classic The Hills Have Eyes to the outrageous Shocker and The People Under the Stairs. Through exclusive interviews with Craven, Robb provides in-depth accounts of the making of each of the films--including the third installment of the Scream series--Craven's foray into writing novels, and his numerous television projects.

With a full filmography and more than 200 photographs, many from the director's own collection (including a detailed overview of Craven's television work), Screams and Nightmares is quite simply the only book of its kind. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author
Brian J. Robb is a journalist and author of books on Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, River Phoenix, and Leonardo DiCaprio. He has been researching the films of Wes Craven for over ten years, and a majority of the material for this book came from his many interviews with the writer/director.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET items for sale in the POPCULTURE SHOP eBAY Store

New in Stock we have a few issues of NIGHTMARES ON ELM STREET, a full color painted comic book series published by INNOVATION COMICS back in 1991.

Although Marvel Comics was the first to publish a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET comic book, as a black and white magazine in 1989, Innovation should be given credit for the sophistication of their comic book as well as the fact that it fit very well inside of the continuity of the movies (even Wes Craven's NEW NIGHTMARE, which came later)!

It was during this era that most comic books shifted from four color newsprint format that traditionally typified most "comic books" since it's introduction as disposable entertainment, to a much higher quality product that was sold to mostly adult readers and collectors through a direct market of Comic Book Specialty Stores.

Thus, Innovation Comics was able the create a comic book that captured the same kind of moody, violent, over-the-top horror that could be appreciated by the grown up fans of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movies!

The artwork for the first few issues were fully painted in a wonderfully expressive style by TONY HARRIS, who would be best known for co-creating the new STARMAN (Jack Knight) with JAMES ROBINSON for DC COMICS, and is currently drawing BRIAN K VAUGHN'S excellent superhero-turned-politician comic book EX MACHINA.

The story itself fits very neatly between NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5: THE DREAM CHILD and FREDDY'S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE.  This series reunites a number of familiar characters for one last battle with Freddy and tying up the loose ends before Freddy's Dead.

Nancy Thompson (from the original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS) has become Freddy's equal in the dream world, and with the help of Neil Gordon, she plans to end Freddy's reigning nightmare. But, what are Freddy's plans with the newly arrived Jacob Johnson (the former DREAM CHILD) and his mother Alice (THE DREAM MASTER)? How does Springwood's new serial killer tie into all of this?

Also of interest are the dream sequences that suggest Freddy was also Jack the Ripper.  Given the meta-fictional aspects of WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE, and Craven himself in the movie expressing how he feels like he was tapping into something older and more primal with the creation of Freddy, this aspect of the mythos is certainly intriguing.

This series sported some great painted covers.

The first issue contains a preview for the fully painted QUANTUM LEAP Comic Book series!
