SHERLOCK HOLMES #1 COMIC BOOK SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE VINTAGE '75 DENNY O'NEIL!!!

SHERLOCK HOLMES #1 COMIC BOOK

RARE and OUT OF PRINT COLLECTORS ITEM.
SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s brilliant, eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes has been adapted numerous times in books, plays, movies, television, and comic books.

Sherlock Holmes has been one of the best-loved mystery detectives for over a century. He first appeared in the 1887 story, “A Study in Scarlet,” penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The story was a great success, and subsequent stories propelled Doyle and his detective to stardom.

In 1975, DC presented its version of Sherlock’s adventures in comic form. Issue #1 of this series presented two entire Sherlock Holmes mysteries: “The Final Problem” and “The Riddle of the Empty House.” The former story was meant to be Sherlock Holmes’ last adventure, ending with Holmes plummeting off an icy cliff along with his arch-enemy, Professor James Moriarty. Public outcry eventually led Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to resurrect Holmes much later, in “The Riddle of the Empty House.”

Strangely, this series lasted just one issue, even though its final page promised a second issue.

The Cases of Sherlock Holmes had two purposes during its run. The first purpose was to retell the famous stories about the master detective as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Renegade Press did this by actually reprinting the stories in their entirety, along with pen-and-ink illustrations. The series’ second purpose was to tell the biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Each issue of the series carried a few pages about the celebrated English author. The biography was written by Gordon Derry.

The Cases of Sherlock Holmes premiered in 1986 and was printed in black-and-white with painted covers.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s brilliant, eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes has been adapted numerous times in books, plays, movies, television, and comic books. One of the best graphic treatments of the character was by illustrator Daniel Day during the 1980s. Day’s pulpbook, black-and-white, drypoint style was supplemented with blocks of typeset text from the actual Sherlock Holmes stories, an illustrated narrative.

In essence, each issue was a profusely illustrated version of a single Canonical tale with a fully painted cover by the brothers Day. Although Basil Rathbone was the most common inspiration for the look of Holmes, one can find traces of Peter Cushing, Arthur Wontner, Alan Wheatley, Robert Stephens, Christopher Plummer and John Barrymore as well. While many different actors inspired the look of Holmes, Watson was always drawn with Nigel Bruce firmly in mind. Dan Day noted that in a black and white medium, the difference in body type and coloring made for a good visual contrast between the slender dark-haired Holmes and the heavy fair-haired Watson.

SHERLOCK HOLMES VS DRACULA COMIC BOOK SCARLET IN GASLIGHT BRAM STOKER DETECTIVE!

SHERLOCK HOLMES VS DRACULA
SCARLET IN GASLIGHT COMIC BOOK

COLLECTORS ITEM FIRST ISSUE.

Two of literature’s most prominent characters meet in this black-and-white tale of horror. Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective Sherlock Holmes, and the ever-present Dr. Watson, are drawn into an adventure beyond anything they have ever experienced when they face the timeless evil of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Investigating a young woman’s mysterious illness, Holmes and Watson find her already under the care of Dr. Van Helsing, whose methods at first seem very odd. But when the two detectives find themselves battling her demonic attacker, they barely manage to survive. Unfortunately, the supremely logical mind of Sherlock Holmes is unable to reconcile his concept of reality with the obviously supernatural nature of his vampiric enemy. It appears that Dracula will have free rein to terrorize London, unless Watson and Van Helsing can bring Holmes back from the edge of insanity.

This black-and-white limited series by writer Martin Powell and artist Seppo Makinen is a worthy sequel to the excellent Scarlet In Gaslight, which brought detective Sherlock Holmes into conflict with Count Dracula. Here, Victorian-era Londoners are reporting mysterious, floating objects and apparitions with visible internal organs, and baffled officials at Scotland Yard have brought in super-sleuth Holmes to get to the bottom of these strange sightings. As it turns out, Holmes is in a battle of wits with none other than Hawley Griffin, the title character of H.G. Wells’s The Invisible Man. But what is Griffin’s connection with the Holmes’s partner, Dr. Watson? Curiouser and curiouser, eh?

The consistent appeal of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s master sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, is borne out by another attempt to portray his obvious cerebral reputation in a medium usually more suited to action-oriented scenes. Depictions of Holmes and his faithful companion, Dr. Watson, interviewing and investigating, require an artistic style that excels at facial diversity and interesting layouts which can make a “talking heads” scene visually exciting.

This black and white series from Moonstone features art that has been reproduced directly from pencil drawings rather than inked artwork. The various artists generate engaging layouts.

SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE MISSING MARTIAN #1 COMIC BOOK.

RARE and OUT OF PRINT FIRST COLLECTORS ITEM.

SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE's Detective Returns in all new adventures! Facing off against the Martians of HG WELLS' WAR OF THE WORLDS. And what does JACK THE RIPPER have to do with all of this?

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s brilliant, eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes has been adapted numerous times in books, plays, movies, television, and comic books.

Sherlock Holmes and Martians! According to the history laid down by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, he and Doctor Watson lived at 221b Baker Street between 1881-1904, so they would have likely been in London during the invasion of 1900. This is not even the first time the great detective has gone up against the Martian foe, (Manly and Wade Wellman wrote a story in 1969) but it's the only time such a story has been immortalised in illustrated form.

Set in May 1908, after the Martian invasion as told by H.G. Wells, Sherlock Holmes in the Case of the Missing Martian is a story about the theft of a Martian Fighting Machine from that invasion, and the attempts of Sherlock Holmes to track it down. The depictions of the aliens are quite true to the Wells vision.

England has recovered from the Martian attack and at the British Museum the board of trustees are arriving for a preview of a major new exhibition about the invasion. But something has gone terribly wrong. A glass display case containing a seemingly dead Martian has been smashed open. Mysterious tracks move away from the case, and the terrified guard will only say that the thing inside went for a walk. Naturally the police are baffled, so Watson is dispatched to the Sussex Downs where Holmes is engaged in mysterious and secret experiments. Speeding back to London with Watson, Holmes is soon on the trail of the missing Martian, but did it really wake from the dead, or are other forces at work?

Author Doug Murray is clearly having great fun messing with two icons of British literature, but he keeps his feet firmly on the ground and delivers a well-paced story that never skimps on the action, but equally takes time out to be cleverly introspective with the character of Holmes.

Graphic Classics: Arthur Conan Doyle, (Paperback)

SHERLOCK HOLMES PLUS GREAT TALES OF GHOSTS, PIRATES AND MYSTERY!

RARE and OUT OF PRINT COLLECTORS ITEM.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Product Description
Graphic Classics: Arthur Conan Doyle is completely revised, with over a hundred pages of new material. New to this edition are comics adaptations of Sherlock Holmes in "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb" by Rod Lott and Simon Gane, and Brigadier Gerard in "The Castle of Gloom" by Antonella Caputo and Nick Miller. Plus Doyle's fearsome pirate "Captain Sharkey", illustrated by John W. Pierard, "The Ghosts of Goresthorpe Grange" by Peter Gullerud, and "The Great Brown-Pericord Motor" by Milton Knight. Returning from the first edition are Sherlock Holmes in "The Copper Beeches" by Rick Geary, and stories illustrated by Roger Langridge and J.B. Bonivert. With a new cover by Rick Geary. This new edition offers not only a greater range of Doyle's output but also more cartoonists to interpret the writing. Yes, Holmes is here: Rick Geary delivers an image-driven retelling of "The Copper Beeches" and Rod Lott and Simon Gane take on Holmes in "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb." But Doyle wrote a lot besides detective stories: J. B. Bonivert offers an adaptation of the author's sf story "The Los Amigos Fiasco"; Peter Gullerud and Pomplun rework "The Ghosts of Goresthorpe Grange"; and Pomplun takes on "Sharkey," a tale about pirates. Roger Langridge, Milton Knight, Antonella Caputo, and Nick Miller are also among the contributors to this black-and-white collection, which showcases as many drawing styles as story types.

* Paperback: 144 pages
* Publisher: Eureka Productions; 2nd edition (November 15, 2005)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0974664855

Doyle's prose and poetry are brought to life in this exciting volume.

In The Ghosts of Goresthorpe Grange, a man believes that his house is occupied by spirits and seeks out the help of a medium. Ultimately, he is drugged and swindled, and the dreamlike style of the art reinforces this mood. In Two Great Brown-Pericord Motor, two men create an invention and become fiercely jealous and protective of it, until disaster erupts. This volume also contains two Sherlock Holmes stories and thrilling tales of sea adventures. Though each one is illustrated by a different artist, the writing ties the collection together nicely.

The artists have deftly captured the themes and moods of each piece in the black-and-white illustrations done in a wide range of styles and techniques.

DR JEKYLL AND MR HOLMES COMIC BOOK #1

SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE'S CREATION MEETS ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON'S.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Writer Steven Philip Jones came up with an interesting premise: What would happen if the world’s most infamous dual personality came face-to-face (as it were) with the world’s most famous detective? Richard Enfield’s chance observance of a bit of cruelty on the part of Mr. Hyde starts off the adventure. Hyde, unfeelingly, had run down a small child, and under the threat of mob action was forced to make reparations. Enfield noticed that the payment to the girl was made partly in gold, and partly in the form of a check from Dr. Henry Jekyll. Thinking it most strange that such a respected man as Dr. Jekyll would hand over this large sum to a brute like Hyde, Enfield asked Sherlock Holmes to look into the matter. What follows is a fine tale of detection which deftly weaves together the tale of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde with an old-fashioned Sherlock Holmes mystery.
