Fantastic comic book series featuring CAPTAIN HARLOCK! Published by Eternity Comics in 1989.
Captain Harlock is an American interpretation of Leiji Matsumoto’s classic anime hero. Harlock is an ex-starship commander who refuses to lay down his arms when Earth surrenders to an alien invasion fleet. The first series concerns Harlock’s past associations and current attempts to liberate Earth from the Illumidas occupation force, and re-instill a sense of worth in the physically and spiritually defeated human population.
A major theme resonating through the entirety of the canon is that as long as the Tree of Freedom has strong roots, no matter how far they spread, liberty will bloom again.
The supporting cast includes Emeraldas the pirate Queen, who becomes embroiled in the war against the Illumidas, Baron Darghund, Harlock’s boyhood friend and rival, and Alexander Nevich, finishing construction of the Deathshadow, a ship that will obliterate Harlock’s Arcadia.
These comic books were never available to the mass market and were only sold in comic book specialty shops.
Created by Japanese animator Leiji Matsumoto, Space pirate Captain Harlock and the crew of the Arcadia debuted in American comics in 1989, setting sales records at the time for a black-and-white comic. Harlock and his friends are swept up in the rebellion against the Illuminadas and the Machine People, the android aristocracy that now controls Earth. It is a desperate time for Harlock and the others, their battles brutal and deadly, and many do not survive to see the outcome of their struggle. At what point does the price of victory become too high, the cost of freedom too much bear?
