1981 ... Don Turnbull (editor) ... 128 pages ... TSR 2012 ... ISBN 0935696210

Fiend Folio is a second tome of monsters for the AD&D first edition game. It came after the original Monster Manual, but before Monster Manual II.

While the monsters in the Monster Manuals are primarily authored by Gary Gygax, the monsters in the Fiend Folio are created by players of the game itself in the United Kingdom. In truth, the book is a compilation of other people's creations, and some monsters (namely from the D series) from AD&D modules.

That said, Fiend Folio feature some monsters that survives to this day in the 3rd edition: the slaad, kenku, githyanki, githzerai, aarakocra, achaierai, bullywug, the ever popular death knight, mephits, gibberlings, grimlocks, penaggalan, to name a few.

The 128-page hardcover Fiend Folio owes much of its content to "Fiend Factory", at the time a regular column appearing in Games Workshop's magazine White Dwarf. Material was drawn from the first ten issues of the magazine. Also edited by Turnbull, "Fiend Factory" also featured new AD&D monsters, many of them created by gamers who read the magazine. The book used the same format as that of the Monster Manual, clearly and succinctly defining the each monster's specifications and abilities

From the preface: "The various creatures contained herein are for use in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Parameters have been set for that game. Those monsters drawn from my original work have been revised and expanded upon accordingly. Except as noted, all new monsters are strictly of this author's creation--just as all those which appeared in The Strategic Review were--and I take the burden of full responsibility for them. It is necessary to acknowledge the contributions of the following persons: Steve Marsh for devising the creatures for undersea encounters which originally appeared in Blackmoor, as I have radically altered them herein; Erol Otus for doing the preliminary work and illustrations of the anhkheg and remorhaz which appeared in The Dragon; Ernie Gygax for the water weird and for his help in solidifying many of the characteristics of the creatures herein; Terry Kuntz, who was never thanked for his prototypical beholder, a revised version of which was included in Greyhawk; to the whole crew at TSR, and to Brian Blume, Tim Kask, and Dave Sutherland in particular, is due thanks for helping me get this whole project into a manuscript; and to my wife, Mary, who has been stuck with the job of typing most of the manuscript, my apologies for mistakes needing correcting and my admiration for staying with it day after day. If I have missed thanking any other person, please pardon the oversight."

"This book provides a complete alphabetical listing of all 'monsters' encountered in the various works which comprise the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game system. It is an invaluable aid to players and Dungeon Masters alike!"
