Marvel introduces its vision of the future with Spider-Man 2099 (Ravage 2099, Doom 2099, and Punisher 2099 soon followed). In that future, populations are controlled by drug abuse and police-state tactics, with the strings being pulled by powerful corporations.
One of those corporations, Alchemax, had employed Miguel O’Hara to create a sort of super-human “corporate raider.” Their model was the twentieth century’s Spider-Man. O’Hara rebelled, however, and quit the project when a colleague tried to introduce humans as early “guinea pigs.” His employer had other plans, and tricked him into drinking a glass of wine laced with “Rapture,” a powerfully addictive drug. With O’Hara hooked, he would not be able to leave. In desperation, O’Hara tried to cure himself by using himself as a subject in his own project. In doing so, O’Hara was transformed into a spider-like creature…Spider-Man 2099.
