VINTAGE COLLECTOR'S ITEM!

MARVEL COMICS PUBLISHED THE VERY FIRST COMIC BOOK APPEARANCE OF DAVID LETTERMAN IN 1980's.

Perhaps you've been following the David Letterman extortion/sex scandal. Perhaps you caught his on-air mea culpa, where the late night host apologized to his wife, his staff, and even Sarah Palin.

But there's one more person to whom David Letterman owes an apology: A poor, hapless supervillain whom he publicly shamed on his NBC "Late Night" show way back in 1984.

You see, David Letterman once hit the Mechano-Marauder with a giant doorknob.
Spoiled brat techno-wiz, Fabian Stankowicz (Mechano-Marauder, a joke villain from issues 217 and 221), has a new plan for getting revenge on The Avengers. Upon learning that Wonder Man’s agent has arranged for a number of Avengers, plus Hawkeye who’s currently on active-duty, to appear on the David Letterman Show, Fabian sneaks and rigs the studio with his gadgets, before showtime. During the show, The Avengers are attacked by a ray-beam camera, heat-seeking missiles, and a omnium steel, gravimetrically powered steamroller. While The Avengers are thus occupied, Fabian invites himself to sit in the guest’s seat, where he gloats to David Letterman and the home audience, about what he’s doing and how he’s doing it. The Black Widow makes a try for Fabian, but he has a force-field around himself and his celebrity interviewer. The Avengers wreck the gadgets, and since David Letterman is the only one inside the force-field with Fabian, it’s up to him to knock out the bad guy. He does it with an oversized doorknob. Boink!
