Vietnam Journal by Don Lomax is one of the best comic book portrayals of Vietnam ever. It's probably one of the best works ever put down in any art form about the war. Lomax created Vietnam Journal back in the 1980’s for Apple Comics.
This issue: Beginning a new series that focuses on the infamous TET OFFENSIVE in 1968.
Written and illustrated by veteran Don Lomax, here is the Vietnam War told in an extraordinary graphic novel. The stories may be fiction, but their intensity and emotional resonance point to social and personal truths that go beyond mere facts.
The troops in Vietnam call war correspondent Scott Neithammer "Journal." His editors sent him to Southeast Asia to write what was happening in South Vietnam. But Neithammer discovers quickly that the real story about the Vietnam War was not at division or battalion headquarters. It was in the bush with soldiers who live with the slime, the stink, the constant fear and frustration of fighting a war that "the powers that be" would not let them win.
Sent to Vietnam to report on the conflict, Scott "Journal" Neithammer expects to do no more than produce another sterilized war report. However, he soon realizes that, "the real story was in the bush with the slime, the stink, the constant fear and frustration." Each episode is a mix of the absurd and horrific as Journal befriends an ever-changing cast of doomed soldiers. As he confronts the death, illogic, and contradiction around him, he becomes as conflicted as the war itself, finally losing his journalistic objectivity in a fit of frustrated rage. The black-and-white artwork is powerful, and Journal's world is a rumpled fusion of realism and caricature. Particularly moving are the few instances where a single image fills the page.
VIETNAM JOURNAL, the comic, was introduced by Apple Comics in 1987.
Vietnam War veteran Don Lomax created Scott “Journal” Neithammer who wants to tell the "truth" about Vietnam. Much like Lomax Journal is also a war veteran of the Korean War. Soon Journal discovers that there are many different versions of truth and that some are safer to tell than others.
Soon though, Journal realizes it’s impossible to remain a noncombatant in this war. At times equally funny and horrifying, one can really feel the authors hand desperately wanted to tell the reader his story.
There is no better person than Lomax to tell this story. He was drafted into the Army in the fall of l965 at the age of 21, took basic at Fort Knox, AIT at Aberdeen, Maryland and was shipped out to Vietnam in the fall of 1966 on the USS General John Pope. At times it seems like the self taught Lomax was destined to tell this story in comic book form. Growing up, he was a huge fan of war comics like Blazing Combat and Two-Fisted Tales which is why his art has that EC-inflected style.

The comic tells of the adventures of the title character, Lenore, and her variety of friends. The primary focus is dark humor, with many of the stories having amusing twist endings. Common themes are the reinvention of children's songs, games, and nursery rhymes to something more macabre, and subverting all sorts of pop culture icons and cultural figures in to topics of dark comedy.

Blackjack is Aaron Day, the son of a mercenary who died in 1923 at the hands of the Cobra, a charismatic Middle Eastern cult leader and rebel warrior. Sworn to avenge the deaths of his parents and his uncle, Blackjack makes the pursuit of the Cobra his life’s work in this well-written and gorgeously illustrated series from Alex Simmons and Joe Bennett (The Amazing Spider-Man). A nice mix of elements that bring to mind such high-adventure concepts as 1930s movie serials, Milton Caniff’s “Terry and the Pirates,” Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and even Randy Reynaldo’s Rob Hanes. Blackjack is also notable for its focus on an African-American hero in a genre dominated by white protagonists.
Excerpt of an interview with creator Alex Simmons...
"So how about a black adventurer, ‘cause then you can see the 30’s and 40’s from that perspective, and it would make the stories more interesting for me to write. And then the more I worked on the character of Aaron Day, the history and his origin and all of that, the more I would do some research to make sure I wasn’t going too far afield of reality. I mean, it was certainly going to be a fictional character, but what would support this?
By the time I finished the character, I’d discovered that there had been, for lack of a better word, an adventurer, known as a Black Sparrow. His real name was Eugene Bullard. As a matter of fact, it’s in the back of this. [Reaches for my copy of Blackjack: Blood & Honor and turns to the back.] I discovered him after I had created the character and I went, my god. So not only did I believe it was possible, but now I’m seeing that somebody had some adventures like this. He flew in World War One for the French, and he’s an American. He escaped from the United States because he got tired of the KKK visiting his house. And he was a young lad, not even 14 when he took off from Mississippi, and he worked his way to the coastline, he stowed away on a German freighter and he dropped in Europe. He worked his way across Europe, doing all kinds of odd jobs including boxing and things like that, until he wound up in France during the first World War, and got himself in the first Air Force. And it goes on from there, the different things he was involved in and the people he knew [like] Josephine Baker and a number of the people of that Renaissance period. But I thought, this is reality, and I did my fictional character, and now I feel even better about having created Aaron Day, because now I am gonna be able to bring people’s attention to folks that really did those things."

Werewolf is based on the Fox TV series that ran from 1987-88. Although it was short-lived, the series managed to create a small cult following, and the program was one of the network’s first shows. However, the comic book version was virtually unnoticed. The werewolf is Eric Cord. Cord is asked by a friend to kill him, claiming that a werewolf had bitten him. When Cord demands proof, his buddy transforms into the creature and attacks him. Cord grants him his wish, but it is too late: He has inherited the curse. Cord is then wanted for murder with a bounty hunter on his trail.

Some of the images are even more haunting on the page then in the film. I was reminiscing about the great artwork from the EC Comics era and how much Katro’s work mirrors that.
Based on the original screenplay by George A. Romero & John Russo this is a testament to great storytelling not only through words but through pictures and art. It delves into a lot of the back story of the characters that is just hinted at in the film.
It had a very low print run as an indie comic book.

Fat Freddy is one of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, a trio of lovable, comic hippies. Since Fat Freddy and the gang are always in trouble, his cat is apt to feel neglected. As a result, Fat Freddy’s Cat become something like a hilariously evil version of Garfield. FFC habitually gets into trouble, soils the apartment, and loves nothing more than sinking his claws into Fat Freddy’s waterbed.
First appearing as a tiny second feature squeezed into the bottom of Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers newspaper strips, Fat Freddy’s Cat was eventually enlarged and collected into this series of comic books. Although it was distributed primarily through head shops and other underground outlets, it nevertheless went on to become a remarkably popular comic.

This self-published series presents part three of the Den saga. In it, Den searches for his missing lover, Kath, meeting characters from the previous stories in a tale which also encompasses a parallel quest for magical stones of power owned by an evil wizard. There’s an almost photographic feel to Corben’s drawing, which is strangely at odds with the grotesques that populate his strips. The strong coloring and lettering styles play an important role, producing an unsettling overall effect on the artwork. In 1992, Marvel decided to copy SI’s success by launching their own swimsuit special. This all-pinup book features scantily clad heroes, both male and female, as rendered by some of the finest artists in the business. These include the brothers Hildebrandt, Joe Jusko, P. Craig Russell, and countless others.
Many decry the obvious use of sex appeal to sell comics. On the upside, these specials did attract at least a few female readers—even if they were writing in to gush over the scantily clad physique of Thor.
