What is amazing about this series is that all the original stories did take place as the backstory and the explanation of how much darker the tone in this contemporary Land of Oz was the influence of the Earth seeping in and corrupting the wonderful world it was. No ingénue this, our new Dorothy is far from Baum’s babe in arms. The 2005 model is a contemporary teen, complete with dyed hair, piercings, foul mouth, and a Starbucks craving. The story isn’t for younger readers. mostly a retelling of Baum. Dorothy’s pickup truck is whisked away by a cyclone to a new land—one with extra moons in the sky. In the last few pages, malevolence is introduced, and who knows where that’s going? The photography and computer visualizations are amazing. They unfortunately discover that the Scarecrow has built an army of his own through the magic of Magician Pipt. An army of straw golems stands Scarecrow and the Freedom Fighters, with Scraps caught in the middle.

Frank Baum's Land of Oz to assist a group a Freedom Fighters (Amber Ombi (nephew of Ombi Ambi), Jack Pumpkinhead, Tik-Tok, Wogglebug, Hungry Tiger etc.) who have banded together when Ruggedo and Mombi have conquered it, placing the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion on the thrones of various parts of the country, placed under spells to make them tyrants.

Oz is based on the characters and “history” from the series of fourteen childrens books written by L. Frank Baum. Writers Ralph Griffith and Stuart Kerr created an updated and unique world, no longer whimsical, but still lots of fun. Beginning with a tribute to the original story, The Wizard of Oz, the tale begins with three 90’s era twenty-somethings being swept away from our Earth to the land of Oz via tornado. Dorothy - A farmgirl in the big city, Dorothy doesn't remember her adventures in Oz from her childhood.

The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles takes Dorothy and Alice (now college students) on an adventure, back into the realms of their childhood. Even though Dorothy spent time in Oz, she has forgotten about it. Alice attributes hers to daydreaming, or childhood dreams. But what neither of them realizes is that Oz and Wonderland, and the creatures that inhabit those lands, are real. The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles is set in modern day Chicago, it will be a blend of the 3 worlds as Dorothy and Alice set out to find the cause of the disruption. Somehow, creatures from OZ and Wonderland are finding there way into downtown Chicago.
