INTERNATIONAL BRIGADE

1938 before World War II engulfed Europe, all eyes were on the Spanish Civil War. It was a war of fascism versus socialism, dictator versus king, Germany versus Europe, and everyone was choosing sides. What happens when a Spaniard, a German, an Irishman, and an Englishman find themselves trapped in the same foxhole? Their story is told in WAR STORY: CONDORS, written by Garth Ennis (PREACHER, HITMAN, Punisher) with art by Carlos Ezquerra (ADVENTURES IN THE RIFLE BRIGADE). And just as he did with the first highly acclaimed series of WAR STORY books, Ennis delivers a combination of grit and personality that has rocketed him to the top of the comics field. CONDORS tells the tale of four very different soldiers who all want the same thing: to win their war. As battles rage outside of Madrid, the men each with his own world view and reasons for fighting find themselves face-to-face with the enemy as they all take cover in the same foxhole. With little water or food and just one pistol among them, they must figure out how to survive the night...and each other.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: a Spaniard, an Englishman, a German, and an Irishman are trapped in the same foxhole for the night. It’s no joke, it’s part of Garth Ennis’s War Story series of tales about war and conflicts around the world. This time Ennis’s target is the Spanish Civil War, where four men take cover in a foxhole to hide from a barrage of artillery. With few effective weapons, they decide to wait out the bombardment together, despite being on opposite sides of the war. As each tells the story that led them there, they learn that their ideologies and reasons for fighting are as different as they are. Three of the four have romanticized the notion of war as offering something of value. Then the Spaniard shares his story, offering a horrifying vision of the toll taken by true and endless warfare.

PUBLISHED BY DC COMICS IN 2001.

Garth Ennis is probably best known for his hard-hitting but historically accurate and empathetic War Stories, fictionalising the heroics of War without shying too far away from the immense destructive force of modern warfare.
